Becoming One's Own Self

Picture

Adolescence is a tumultuous time of separation and self-searching. The desire to remain inside the secure world of childhood pushes against the sense of entitlement to
break free into the adult world of privileges and self-determination. Brain development sparks the adolescent
to rebel, withdraw, take risks, feel immortal, feel overwhelmed, feel worthless. Anxieties erupt. Fears haunt. The body changes. Sexuality intoxicates. Body image and social image become paramount. Anger and loss chafe against childhood innocence as the failings of the world around them are revealed.

No wonder there is such tumult.

Especially when global uncertainties heighten underlying tensions.

Especially when the lines between image and authenticity are blurred beyond recognition.
Adolescents and their parents reach out for treatment when anxiety, depression, and behavioral issues become too detrimental to their quality of life.

I help adolescents with techniques that build skills for a lifetime of mental and emotional health.

  • Self-regulation skills quiet the mind, calm the nervous system, and build resilience.
  • Self-reflection skills cultivate the habits of truth, vulnerability, acceptance, and authenticity in relationship with the newly emerging core self.
  • Self-understanding develops the ability to gain insight and perspective, take responsibility, and discern between image and realness.
  • Self-anchoring grows a felt-sense of “Here I Am.”  The skill of centering locates an internal reference point for self-efficacy and self-trust.

I utilize a mix of talk, art, mindfulness, cognitive-behavioral, and Hakomi methods.

If this sounds like it might be a fit for your adolescent, let’s connect. I offer a free, no-obligation 20-minute consultation.
